Step four, run the batch file. Let it run until the Dos screen closes. Step five, reboot the machine and run the install again; 4) If all steps above do not resolve. I am trying to upgrade a user to Adobe Acrobat reader 9.1. She currently has Adobe Acrobat Standard 6.0 installed on her PC running Windows XP Professional SP3.
How-To Geek Forums / Windows Vista
Hey everyone,
Determine Registry Permissions. Installer program typically makes changes to your computer Registry to save and retrieve the required information.
I ran into some trouble with Adobe Reader and opening .pdf, so I figured I would simply uninstall/reinstall it. Upon attempting to reinstall, an error comes up saying:
Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareClassesAcroExch.SequenceDefaultIcon. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel.
I have no choice but to click OK, and then the installation rolls back and notifies me that nothing has been modified on my system. I went on Adobe's website and there was a tool that was supposed to fix errors 1406 and 1402, and that did nothing. After searching on other forums, there were suggestions of using Run As Administrator on the Adobe Setup and turning UAC on. Neither of those did anything. After another suggestion, I went into the Registry Editor to where the registry key listed in the error was and tried to change the permission. The AcroExch.Sequence folder can be opened and the permissions can be changed, but the DefaultIcon can't open at all. If I attempt it, I get an error that basically says Access is Denied.
I'm running Windows Vista, and I use Mozilla Firefox, in case that makes a difference.
Any help or insight as to why this is happening would be great.

i would try to run ccleaner and do a registry scan. if you dont have it you can get it here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
after you run it try to reinstall again. then post up results
Thanks for replying. I tried using the registry scan, and even used another registry cleaner to no avail. I used Revo Uninstaller to see if there was any left over Adobe stuff, and there wasn't. The only thing that was there was some spelling dictionary, and I used an Advanced uninstall on that.
I tried reinstalling, and that yielded the same results, with the same error message and everything. The curious thing is, right before that message pops up, a shortcut for Adobe Reader pops up on my desktop. If I don't click OK on the error message, I can actually open Adobe Reader, and I tried opening .pdf files in it and everything and it works PERFECTLY, but only briefly. After a while, a message pops up saying that AcroRd32.exe has stopped working properly and has to shut down. If I click OK on the original error message (Error 1402) the shortcut disappears. I guess it installs, and then when the error comes up, it uninstalls?
so what would happen if you deleted the key but you might want to back it up first though. then try to install? because it might put the key back into place and fix it. and one other thing you could try re downloading it to see if some how something got messed out along the way?
Do you mean delete AcroExch.SequenceDefaultIcon? Need for speed most wanted. In actual Registry Editor? I tried that and it won't delete it at all. I even tried changing the permissions. It just says: Cannot delete AcroExch.Sequence: Error while deleting key
In the meantime, you can try Foxit Reader http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/ it's a nice little pdf reader that will at least allow you to read your pdf's until you get this issue worked out.
did you ever try to re download reader? and that is weird that it can't be deleted? and also foxit is pretty good had it on my system for a while but then switched back don't remember why though.
jack. It was because you bought the Adobe suite :)
o ya i forgot about that now i kinda feel pretty dumb for not remembering that so that is why i switched back because i didn't need it any more. thx lighthouse. ;)
Oh, my! Jack is Lighthouse's love child! (For more breaking news on this scandal, continue in Off Topic forum)
what i didn't agree to this ;) so what scandal is this?
how is this breaking news i thought every one already knew ;)
You're too late son (unless you want to go back and edit) don't worry. I'll clean up the mess.
ok so i am basicly stumped on this one. but i will have another look around to see if i can find anything. and also i have school tonight so it might not be till later
Any ideas at all? Anyone?
I system restored to the point before I initially uninstalled Adobe. It still has the same problems as before.

Edit: I can't even open Adobe Reader, even though I've done a system restore, and technically, it's on my computer. I can't uninstall either, I get the same 1402 error.
krsn89, if you are seeing this 1402 error for install and uninstall, there may be some corruption in your registry. If you were on XP, I would say run scanreg /fix to try and fix the registry, but apparently Vista no longer has this feature.
Does anyone know of a registry fixer for Vista? I don't. If there is a way, be sure to back up your registry first (e.g., with Erunt).
You said you followed instructions from Adobe. Were those instructions from these pages?
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=329137
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400654&sliceId=2
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=329137
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400654&sliceId=2
Finally, do you have any other Acrobat products installed? Bangin bass 2 vst free download. I ask because if Adobe Reader is uninstalled, and there are no other Acrobat products, I would expect the registry to be free of 'AcroExch' entries. If those are leftovers, it sounds like a dirty uninstall.
Scott,
I've tried the solutions on both those links, and this one as well (http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=329137&sliceId=1) which involves messing with the registry Permissions. I've also tried downloading the ACL utility and that hasn't done anything either, even after restarting. None of those solutions seem to be working.
Error 1402 Repair
To clear things up: I tried uninstalling Adobe Reader, and re-installing. When attempting to re-install was the first time I came across this error. After numerous tries, I thought I'd system restore to BEFORE I uninstalled Reader. Now technically, Reader is installed, but now when I attempt to UNinstall, I encounter the same error.
As for the other programs, I didn't know if you wanted Acrobat programs or Adobe or if it's the same thing. My Add/Remove programs list says:
- Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
- Adobe Photoshop 7.0
- Adobe Reader 8.1.2
- Adobe Shockwave player
- Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
- Adobe Photoshop 7.0
- Adobe Reader 8.1.2
- Adobe Shockwave player
Hope this clarifies things.
have you tried to install a older version of adobe reader maybe for some odd reason this will help but i'm not sure if it will but is worth a try any way. you can get older versions here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_acrobat_reader/
krsn89, thanks for the detailed explanation. It is very clear what your situation is. I think this last KB article is going to be the coup de grâce for Adobe Reader -- #400769 How To Manually Remove Reader 8.0 on Windows:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400769
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400769
Unfortunately, it's written for XP, not Vista, so you'll have to do some translation. I have all the files mentioned for deletion in the article on my Vista install. Acrobat is a brand name that Adobe used to use and the Reader was called 'Acrobat Reader'. Even though it is now 'Adobe Reader', there are still many references to Acrobat in Reader.
Adobe Reader Error 1406

The instructions in this article are amazing. I've never heard of shutting down explorer.exe just to delete a few files, nor have I ever created a New Task from Task Manager. It's like some kind of surgery where they stop the patient's heart for a few minutes. If you go this route, let us know if you have questions.
Thanks a lot for the link. I'm definitely going to do it. I'll post up questions/concerns as they come along, because I'm sure I'll have A LOT.
Cheers.
